"Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with a special dinner that features authentic cuisine from various Asian and Pacific cultures. Learn fun facts about their culture while enjoying a delicious dinner. Take a look at the menu below:
Japanese Hakusai Cabbage Cream Soup Thai Lemongrass Noodle Soup (Vegan) Made-To-Order Chinese Crispy Shrimp Lettuce Wraps with Mango Relish Filipino Mechado (Braised Beef) Vegetable Adobo Vietnamese Grilled Pork with Rice Noodles Korean Ehoba Pak Jon (Fried Young Squash) Indonesian Tofu Sambal Indian Makai Curry (Corn Curry) Nepali Vegetable Pulao (Fried Basmati Rice) Green Tea Ice Cream Sri Lankan Spicy Coconut Custard Filipino Rum Flan Cake" ~ taken from description of sodexho's upcoming even descriptions "http://www.northwestern.edu/nucuisine/"
That all sounds well and good...till you enter a dining hall...decorated with paper lanterns, red cloth everywhere...ok..everything still tolerable....a ginourmous pile of fortune cookes (cuz those are totally Asian)..ok we're still tolerable. now...enter Sodexho crew donning straw hats...wow....how "asian pacific american" yes...allison is truly immersed....drowned in fact, with Asian/Oriental Culture. Not to mention how ALL the food was just regular sodexho crap with an "Asian twist" a.k.a., peanut sauce, "tempura" deepfried vegetables, collard greens minus the meat and oh....pop corn shrimp..with mango chutney and bean sprouts...yep...it screams asia. honestly. its kinda sad having "Asian culture" reduced to fortune cookes, paper lanterns and paper fans. If ever anyone should be sued for gross misrepresentation in advertising...i think " a special dinner that features authentic cuisine from various Asian and Pacific cultures" just about does it...the key word of course being "authentic" never have i seen linguine stir fried in peanut sauce and knighted as "oriental lo mien stir fry" [pronounced low maine...cuz thats how we say it in asia...served in asia of course, with...yes..u got it..fortune cookies]
linguine = stir fry...since when? well...ask sodexho! not to mention how Christine was very surprised when she saw the "Korean Ehoba Pak Jon (Fried Young Squash)" to be deep fried zucchini...yep...apparantly its supposed to be some sort of vegetable pancake...but i guess sodexho conveniently redefined it as "fried young squash". ok heres the full menu:
Dinner Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Dinner! [ COMPLETE with fortune cookes!..awwessommeee]
SOUP: Japanese Hakusai Cabbage Cream Soup [ last i checked i never had or heard of japaenese cream soup ... *shrug*] Thai Lemongrass Noodle Soup (Vegan) [trust me on this one..it tasted like coconut milk...and hot water]
MADE-TO-ORDER: Chinese Crispy Shrimp Lettuce Wraps with Mango Relish [pre-cooked popcorn shrimp does NOT count as "Chinese Crispy Shrimp ]
ENTREES & SIDES: Vietnamese Grilled Pork with Rice Noodles [tastes like the generic sodexho stuff...the usual ASIAN stir fry..cuz if its Asian..its GOT to be stir fried] Korean Ehoba Pak Jon (Fried Young Squash) [Christine, who is quite Korean..contests the validity of this being authentic...i trust her] Filipino Mechado (Braised Beef) [i wud not contest this...if only it didn't taste like every other braised beef dish sodexho serves every other night] White Rice [cook it right fools] Vegetable Adobo [no comment]
VEGAN & VEGETARIAN SELECTIONS: Indonesian Tofu Sambal [didn't see it..but who knows] Indian Makai Curry (Corn Curry) [looked like salsa..didnt want to touch it *note...i love Indian curry...just not sodexho takes on it] Nepali Vegetable Pulao (Fried Basmati Rice) [didnt see it..and if i did..clearly i didnt want to try it]
KOSHER MADE-TO-ORDER: Southwestern Beef with Red Chili & Cilantro Rice [actually..it was kosher meatballs served with linguine (also known by sodexho as "lo mien', with stir fried vegetables and ..ohh oh..this is the asian part guys...cilantro, basil and fresh lime...]
DELI: Special of the Day - Cold Cut Combo Special of the Day - Red Pepper & Provolone Baguette Made-to-Order Deli Sandwiches
GRILL: Special of the Day - Ranch Chicken Sandwich Made-to-Order Grill Selections
DESSERTS: [***] Green Tea Ice Cream Sri Lankan Spicy Coconut Custard Filipino Rum Flan Cake Fortune Cookie
*** Let me highlight the dessert section... green tea ice cream...ok i'll give em that. sri lankan spicey coconut custard....any Sri Lankans out there want to comment on this? Last i checked, custard pies with coconut...probably from Jewel Osco, do not count as Sri Lankan cuisine. ok...Filipino Rum Flan Cake....ok I lived in Manila for 4 years...and I never heard of it..but ok fine. maybe im wrong and i didnt hear about it...a) there was no Rum...b) is flan cake supposed to taste like egg yolks? again..i won't make any judgements on these...i'll let you guys be the judge of sodexho's "authentic" cuisine
Sodexho - the very LEAST you could do for "Asian Pacific American Heritage" is to cook the friggin white rice correctly. It is quite derogatory to have my culture reduced to furtune cookes, paper lanterns and fans...and with Sodexho chefs donning STRAW HATS...do chefs in asia go around with straw hats?...NONE that I'VE seen the 17 years I lived there. Who wears straw hats you ask? FARMERS! (and even that is a generalization) (besides..farmers dont wear THAT kind of straw hat)...but they dont wear straw hats with red paint on it...nor do they serve pseudo-Asian food wearing em. NO WONDER Americans hate Asian food...IT SUCKS HERE
---- Asian culture aside...does anyone else notice that EVERY single Martin Luther King's day...its fried chicken and collard greens? yep...sodexho...furthering our tertiary cultural cuisine education. thanks to them, i am educated...nay, enlightened about the vast myriad of authentic cuisines from all over the world.
